The present education system clearly curtails the development of a genuine nationalist consciousness among the youth and the students.  It continues to shape the thinking and consciousness of students towards and orientation which reflects the country’s long history of foreign colonization and exploitation.

Instead of achieving sovereignty in our political life, economy and culture, education is used as a tool for perpetuating slave mentality and a social system that protect the interests of US imperialism- even if these result in the country’s economic perdition and involvement in meaningless wars. The violent and exploitative character of the current world order is masked by the rhetoric of the neoliberal globalization which is peddled as the solution to all the problems in the world.

  1. Interesting thesis, but I think this view is held by a minority.

      Let’s be clear on a few things.

      1. It’s held by a minority precisely because people don’t know that this has been happening since the nineties. They have another name for it. They call it ‘progress’.

      2. The champions of globalism have all been clear that education nowadays SHOULD be geared toward satisfying the international labour markets. Anything outside this is considered faulty, because the Market is all there is today. Do you disagree? If you do, you’re unaware yourself.

  2. But isn’t it that education’s goal has always been to fulfill the demand for labor? And that the only change nowadays are the recipients of this demand, i.e. from the local to the international? (Or I might be using a paradigm which those in power want me to have :))

    BTW, if you want to promote this thesis, check out EduPhil.org – there around 400 teachers there, and they could use some new ideas.🙂

      The idea that education should have “practical uses”,e.g. it should fulfill the requirements of the international labour market isn’t new. But it doesn’t make it right either; even right wing political economists like Joseph Schumpeter have come to the conclusion that if labour and other resources within a society are put to use for such narrow interests, then a society will eventually topple. The system is unsustainable.

      As for spreading the word regarding this ‘thesis’, I’m afraid that our teachers have to find their way out of the woods themselves. But I am willing to share whatever resources I have to help them. But they have to help themselves, and they should be willing to drop their commonplace assumptions regarding economics and the social value and utility of education.

    Mmm, that would be quite difficult to do, given the amount of work teachers have to render, and the fact that only too few of us – I’m a teacher too – have the luxury to engage in discussions like this.
